ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR THE MONEY

Going from analogue to hybrid to virtual: In terms of organisation, Richard Siegal’s new piece had to be adjusted to the constantly changing COVID-19 regulations in recent months. The concept and the artistic essence, however, remained unaffected. After all, ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR THE MONEY was designed for interactivity from the very beginning – and has now been developed further for the virtual space. Once again, Siegal deals with a topic for which digitality is „virtually“ indispensable: How do social media form and deform our identity, our values?

The show must go on…line!

Preparation is everything! The premiere of Richard Siegal’s new piece – originally under the title ONE FOR THE MONEY – was meant to take place on April 9, 2020. It was rescheduled to November 20, 2020 before being once again hit by the new lockdown for the arts sector. At least the past months have given Siegal time to come up with a sophisticated backup plan: his first live performance conceived purely for the virtual space. A logical next step for the American choreographer who has long had a keen interest the brave new digital world. As early as 2005, Richard Siegal launched the participatory online platform IF/THEN OPEN SOURCE. And last year his virtual reality choreography DAS TOTALE TANZTHEATER was part of the official anniversary programme for 100 years of Bauhaus.

As a result, Richard Siegal / Ballet of Difference now go digital. But – and this is important to Richard Siegal: ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR THE MONEY is no documentation of a stage production. This performance is made for the emerging medium. Its subject matter is the digitalised society but the shows take place live only and are not recorded. However, their virtual nature allows people all over the world to follow the performances at the same time – and, what’s more, to become (inter)active themselves.
