Rosie Kay’s 5 SOLDIERS – The Body is The Frontline

Rosie Kay is looking for male and female performers aged between 20 and 40 for a tour of 5 SOLDIERS 2023.

5 SOLDIERS is the award-wining show, created by Rosie Kay which has toured the world since 2010. A thrilling and humane portrait of army life telling the stories of four men and one woman serving off and on the front line. Highlighting the preparation for war, the personality traits of the soldiers, the off-duty camaraderie, boredom, high-jinx and horseplay, as well as the deeply important and at times contradictory role of women in the Armed Forces, 5 SOLDIERS received praise from serving soldiers, veterans, peace activists, critics and civilians alike.

Deeply realistic, stark, bold, and thrilling, 5 SOLDIERS questions what it is that we ask of professional soldiers and explores how the human body remains essential to war in the 21st century. 5 SOLDIERS has toured the UK, Europe and the USA since 2010.

What we’re looking for

• Male and female performers who are strong, robust and physical
• Excellent dance skills with strong technique and good floor work
• Excellent acting skills
• Ability to deeply understand the role and the real-life experience that made it
• Hard working and determined- this show takes grit and guts
• Professionally trained dancers with at least two years’ experience of performing
• Strong listening and leadership skills
• We may be able to provide training with the military to prepare you for your role and you need to come with a willingness to challenge yourself to your maximum.
• Any prior military experience will be an asset but not necessary.

Audition Details:

Round 1: Male Audition 25th January, Female Audition 26th January

Timetable: 10am – 11am registration, 11am-12.15 class, 12.15-13.15 Drill, 13.15-14.00 lunch, 14.00-15.00 partner work, 15.00-15.45 creative work, 15.45- 16.30 interviews

• Short link online to a 1- minute of you dancing (can be shot on your phone etc, but not a theatre performance – we want to see you in a space moving – please keep it simple)
• The details of someone that can recommend you (could be a teacher or choreographer that knows you)

Please note we cannot offer alternative audition dates or online auditions.

DATES 2023

Rehearsal Period: 20th- 25th March, 27th-31st March, 11th- 14th March

Production Week: 17th-19th April, Norwich

Touring period:     19th-21st April, 26th-29th April (TBC), 12th May, 14th May (+ half travel days to venues as arranged tbc)

Fees:                    £550p/w for three weeks rehearsal.

£650p/w production + performance week, RAF Week (TBC)

Touring period:      £300 per show inclusive + ½ travel day

Expenses: Accommodation and travel will be provided as necessary for the rehearsal, production and touring periods. Per diems paid on single day performance days.
